Recycled water pipeline extension to boost horticulture exports

A proposed $155 million extension of a recycled water pipeline through Adelaide's north will unlock huge job and export opportunities in the horticulture industry, the State Government has said.


SA Premier Jay Weatherill said the State Government would invest $110 million in the project and had sought a $45.6 million commitment from the Federal Government.


"It's estimated through modelling that we will create 3,700 jobs over the next 10 years in this sector," he said.


"It [agriculture] already accounts for one-in-five jobs in South Australia. It's an incredibly important industry in South Australia, so this investment will unlock even greater opportunities."


The Virginia Irrigation Scheme already delivers about 17 gigalitres of recycled water each year from the Bolivar Wastewater Treatment plant to more than 400 growers north of Adelaide.


The expansion would pipe a further 12 gigalitres to the Two Wells area.
